Which word best completes the sentence?
The Question
Although the museum was celebrated for its ancient artifacts, the exhibit itself was ______ — visitors found the displays confusing and poorly labeled.
A ornate
B disorganized
C historic
D popular
Find the pivot word. “Although” signals contrast. Whatever fills the blank must contrast with “celebrated for its ancient artifacts.”
Use the clue after the dash. “Confusing and poorly labeled” tells us the blank means the exhibit was not well put together.
Eliminate positive words. Ornate, historic, and popular are all positive — they don’t match “confusing and poorly labeled.”
Answer: B, disorganized. It’s the only choice that matches the negative clue.
How we tutor it
Sentence completion isn’t about knowing every fancy word — it’s about spotting the pivot word (although, however, because, therefore) and the clue that defines the blank. We drill this pattern until it’s automatic, then layer in vocabulary from real ISEE word lists at your child’s level.

If every red marble weighs the same and every blue marble weighs the same, what does one blue marble weigh?
The Setup
A balanced scale shows: 3 red marbles + 2 blue marbles = 24 grams. Another balanced scale shows: 1 red marble = 4 grams.
A 4 grams
B 6 grams
C 8 grams
D 12 grams
Find the total weight of the reds. 3 red marbles × 4 grams each = 12 grams.
Subtract to isolate the blues. 24 grams (total) − 12 grams (red) = 12 grams left for the 2 blue marbles.
Divide by the number of blues. 12 grams ÷ 2 = 6 grams per blue marble.
Sanity check. 3(4) + 2(6) = 12 + 12 = 24. Answer: B, 6 grams.
How we tutor it
Quantitative Reasoning is logic-first, arithmetic-second. There’s no calculator on the ISEE, so we train students to identify the relationship in the problem before touching numbers. This is the section where careful readers beat fast calculators every time.

A jacket is on sale for 20% off. After the discount, it costs $64. What was the original price?
The Trap
Students who add 20% back to $64 get the wrong answer — because 20% of $64 is not the same as 20% of the original.
A $76.80 (added 20% of $64)

Translate the sale. 20% off means the student pays 80% of the original. So $64 = 80% of the original.
Write it as an equation.
$64 = 0.80 × (original)
Divide both sides by 0.80.
original = $64 ÷ 0.80 = $80
Verify. 20% of $80 = $16, and $80 − $16 = $64. Answer: B, $80.

Percent problems have a predictable structure: identify the whole, translate the percent to a decimal, and write one equation. We teach students to always sanity-check the answer back against the problem — the trap answer is designed to feel right if you skip that step.

The ISEE-Specific Moves Most Kids Never Learn
Three strategies that separate a Stanine 5 from a Stanine 8.

Never leave a blank.
The ISEE has no guessing penalty. A random guess on 4 questions gives you 1 free right answer on average. Blanks give you zero. We train students to always fill in an answer, even on questions they don’t know.

Skip and return.
Every section is timed. Spending 3 minutes on one hard question costs you 3 easier questions later. We teach a 60-second rule: if you can’t start solving in 60 seconds, circle it, guess, and move on. Come back if there’s time.

Understand your stanine.
The ISEE isn’t scored 1–100 — it’s a Stanine scale of 1–9, compared to other test-takers in your child’s grade. Missing a few questions still leaves room for a top stanine. We teach students what score they actually need for their target schools.
