Identify the phrase between the commas. “Who studies migratory birds” is a non-essential description — you could remove it and the sentence still makes sense.

Apply the ACT’s two-comma rule. Non-essential phrases need commas on both sides — a matched pair, never just one.

Eliminate the traps. A has no commas. B and D have only one. Only C matches the rule.

How we tutor it The ACT English section tests a small set of grammar rules over and over — commas, apostrophes, pronouns, verb agreement, transitions. We teach the rule catalog explicitly, then drill each pattern until students see them at a glance. A student who masters 10 rules can typically add 4–6 points to their English score.

The ACT tests right triangle trigonometry in a way the SAT doesn’t. Students walk in expecting SAT-style math and get blindsided.

How we tutor it Every ACT has 4–6 trigonometry questions. Students who’ve only taken Algebra II lose easy points here. We teach the trig unit early — SOHCAHTOA, unit circle basics, and the 3-4-5 / 5-12-13 / 8-15-17 special triangles — before diving into practice tests.

We teach students to read the reference first, choices second — and to be suspicious of any answer with words like “only,” “never,” or “essential.”

Why It Still Matters
Science is optional on the Enhanced ACT — but many competitive schools still expect it, and a strong Science score can boost your STEM application. It’s not a content test: you don’t need biology, you need to read tables and graphs fast.

Look at the table, not the science. You do NOT need to know what an enzyme is. Just read the numbers.

Trace the trend. 4 → 9 → 16 → 22 (climbing) … then 22 → 14 → 3 (dropping).

Find the peak. The reaction rate peaks at 40°C, then falls sharply. So the pattern is up, then down.

Skip passage intros. Go straight to figures. Save Conflicting Viewpoints for last. Score reports separately from composite — but many competitive programs still expect it.
The two rules that add 3–5 points 1. No blanks, ever. The ACT has no guessing penalty. With one minute left, fill in every remaining bubble with the same letter (statistically as good as random) — usually adds 2–3 correct answers.
