AP Calculus AB Unit 3 · Chain Rule & Related Rates

A ladder slides down a wall — how fast?

Problem
A 10-ft ladder leans against a wall. Its base slides away from the wall at 2 ft/s. How fast is the top sliding down when the base is 6 ft from the wall?
  1. Draw & label the picture.
    Right triangle: base = x, height = y, hypotenuse = 10 (constant). Given dx/dt = +2. Find dy/dt when x = 6.
  2. Write the constraint.
    x² + y² = 100
  3. Differentiate implicitly with respect to t.
    2x · (dx/dt) + 2y · (dy/dt) = 0
  4. Plug in the moment.
    When x = 6, y = √(100 − 36) = 8.
    2(6)(2) + 2(8)(dy/dt) = 0 ⇒ dy/dt = −1.5 ft/s
  5. Interpret the sign.
    Negative means the top is falling at 1.5 ft/s. This is exactly the AP rubric’s expected answer — and the interpretation earns the last point.

Why does an enzyme stop working at 60°C?

FRQ Stem
A student measures the rate of catalase (an enzyme) breaking down H₂O₂ at 10°, 25°, 40°, and 60°C. Rate climbs, peaks near 40°, then crashes at 60°. Explain the shape of the curve using enzyme structure.

  1. 10° → 40°: rate rises.
    More kinetic energy ⇒ more enzyme-substrate collisions per second. This is a rate effect, not a structure effect.
  2. 40°: optimum temperature.
    Collision frequency is high but the active site is still folded correctly. Catalase evolved for this range.
  3. 60°: rate crashes.
    Heat breaks the hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions holding tertiary structure. The active site loses its shape — substrate no longer fits.
  4. The AP-scoring word: denaturation.
    Naming denaturation and linking it to tertiary structure → active site shape → loss of function is the full-credit chain.
How we tutor it AP Bio FRQs reward specific vocabulary chained to mechanism. We rehearse these chains on graph-reading questions until the student is writing rubric-language without prompting.

Problem
You mix 4.0 g of H₂ with 28.0 g of N₂ to make ammonia:

  1. Convert to moles first — always.
    n(N₂) = 28.0 / 28.02 ≈ 1.00 mol. n(H₂) = 4.0 / 2.02 ≈ 1.98 mol.
  2. Divide moles by coefficients.
    Smallest ratio wins. H₂: 1.98 / 3 = 0.66. N₂: 1.00 / 1 = 1.00. H₂ is limiting.
  3. Use the limiting reactant to find product.
    1.98 mol H₂ × (2 mol NH₃ / 3 mol H₂) = 1.32 mol NH₃
  4. Convert back to grams.
    1.32 mol × 17.03 g/mol ≈ 22.5 g NH₃

AP English Language Q3 · Argument Essay · Rhetorical Analysis

Turning a claim into a 6-point argument.

“Some people argue that failure is essential to growth. Others say it is overrated as a teacher. Take a position and defend it with specific evidence.”
Weak thesis (Row A: 0/1)
Failure is important because it helps you learn things.
Strong thesis (Row A: 1/1)
While failure carries a real cost, its lessons become durable only when a person is allowed to fail publicly — making a culture’s tolerance for failure, not failure itself, the true engine of growth.
  1. Nail the defensible claim.
    A 4+ thesis must be arguable, not restated prompt. Add a qualifier (“while”, “only when”) to earn sophistication points later.
  2. Build 2–3 lines of reasoning.
    Not just examples — each body paragraph is one reason the thesis is true. Evidence lives inside the reason.
  3. Choose evidence that’s specific.
    SpaceX blowing up 4 rockets before landing one beats “famous inventors failed a lot.” Names, numbers, dates.
  4. Explicit commentary > more evidence.
    Each piece of evidence needs 2–3 sentences of why this proves the reason. This is where Row B points live.
  5. Earn Row C (sophistication).
    Add a counterargument you take seriously, or a broader implication in the conclusion. This is what separates 5s from 6s.
How we tutor it We deconstruct 3 released AP Lang Q3s side-by-side with the College Board’s scoring commentary, then have the student write a full essay in 40 minutes and score it against the rubric before the next session.

HIPP: Historical Context
1852 — two years after the Compromise of 1850 & the Fugitive Slave Act. Sectional tension is boiling.
HIPP: Intended Audience
Northern voters uneasy with both major parties’ silence on slavery’s expansion.
HIPP: Purpose
Recruit anti-slavery voters into a new coalition — the seed of the Republican Party in 1854.
HIPP: Point of View
Third-party political platform. Framing slavery in moral (“sin”) rather than economic terms is deliberate.
  1. Source before you read the body.
    Author, date, type — every DBQ document has these. This is a free rubric point most students skip.
  2. Do HIPP for every doc you use.
    You need 3 documents sourced with HIPP for full evidence points. Not all four Hs matter equally per doc — pick the strongest.
  3. Contextualize BEFORE the thesis paragraph.
    2–3 sentences setting the broader period. This is a separate rubric point from the thesis itself.
  4. Group documents into 2–3 categories.
    The 7-point rubric rewards analytical grouping. This document goes with Uncle Tom’s Cabin excerpts (moral case) — not with economic-argument sources.
How we tutor it APUSH DBQs are won on rubric mechanics, not writing flair. We work backward from the 7-point rubric — sourcing, HIPP, contextualization, complexity — and score every practice DBQ line by line.
Algebra I Unit 4 · Solving Systems of Equations

Two ways to solve a system — when to use which.

Problem
Ana buys 3 notebooks and 2 pens for $13. Ben buys 5 notebooks and 2 pens for $19. How much is one notebook?
Method 1: Elimination
3n + 2p = 13
5n + 2p = 19
Subtract equation 1 from equation 2: 2n = 6 ⇒ n = $3. Plug back: 3(3) + 2p = 13 ⇒ p = $2.
Method 2: Substitution
From eq 1: p = (13 − 3n) / 2
Plug into eq 2: 5n + (13 − 3n) = 19 ⇒ 2n = 6 ⇒ n = $3.
  1. Read twice, name variables.
    n = notebook, p = pen. Write both equations before touching math.
  2. Pick the faster method.
    Same coefficient on p means elimination is cleaner here. If coefficients don’t match, substitution usually wins.
  3. Solve, then always check.
    Plug both answers back into the ORIGINAL equations, not the ones you manipulated.
  4. Answer with units.
    One notebook is $3. A number without a unit is half an answer.

Can we switch subjects within a single plan?
Yes. Your hours are fully transferable across all of our academic subjects (Math, Science, English, History) and grade levels. We recommend focusing on one subject at a time for the strongest results, but you have full flexibility.
Are sessions online or in-person?
Both. Online sessions are one-on-one video sessions with an interactive whiteboard and can be recorded for later review. In-person sessions are available in Dallas / Frisco / Plano and the greater DFW area, plus Houston, Austin, San Antonio, San Diego, Seattle, and Fairfax — at your home or a public location. Students are matched with a tutor and scheduled as soon as possible; please check with our office for current availability and wait times.
What’s your refund policy?
We offer a 60-day prorated refund on unused hours plus a satisfaction guarantee. If you’re not happy after your first session, you get a full refund on unused hours. You can also cancel your plan at any time.
